First of all, it should be noted that the offensive line of the Montreal Canadiens is not in peak form. True, the Cole-Desharnais-Pacioretty line has continued to distinguish itself in recent games by scoring four of the six goals scored this week (and David Desharnais scored two of those goals, landing him in 43rd place among NHL point scorers).
There is no doubt that the trio works fairly well. However, hockey experts in Montreal are in agreement that a second scoring offensive line is needed in order to put forth a balanced offence. This is the only way the Canadiens will be able to compete against high calibre teams and have a chance of making it to the postseason.
A couple of good offensive lines are all the more necessary since their defence is not very convincing at the moment. While Gorges has so far managed to block 186 shots on net, they still need a defensive line-up that is reliable and consistent if they really want to improve their standings. Carey Price is doing his best, but has not had a great season. More importantly, he has so far failed to live up to the expectations of the fans and management.
This overview of the Canadiens’ situation is rather grim. However, management doesn’t seem to be too preoccupied with the team’s outcome this season. Rather, they are focusing on building a better team for the future.
It seems all but certain that the 2012 playoffs will take place without the Montreal Canadiens. There are still a few games left before the end of this somewhat dismal season and the Canadiens will use these games to implement some changes. These include re-integrating Andrei Markov, who shows promise of returning to the line-up in the near future, and setting the groundwork for the introduction of Patrick Holland, the forward from the WHL Tri-City Americans who just signed a three-year contract with the Canadiens.
